A timber pile is a long, slender column that is driven into the ground to transfer load from a supported structure through weak or soft soils to more competent soils below. Timber piles can be inspected prior to installation and they conform to ASTM standards to provide consistent quality. They are readily available and easily installed. Their tapered shape acts like a wedge as they are driven into the soil, providing increased capacity. Timber piles are also displacement piles, i.e., they displace and densify the surrounding soil as they are driven. Not only do you obtain the benefit of the timber pile’s bearing capacity, you also benefit from improved soil between the piles. Timber piles accommodate compression, tension and lateral loads well. Timber piles are also useful in a variety of near-shore marine applications as well as ground improvement and reinforcement applications. Timber piles are renewable, sustainable and domestically produced. As a naturally grown product, they serve as an efficient method of storing carbon, keeping it out of the atmosphere.
